The Abomination of Desolation — Then and Now

In this message, we examine Jesus’ solemn warning about “the abomination of desolation” as recorded in Matthew 24, and trace its meaning through the prophetic writings of Daniel. By allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture, we explore how Christ’s words found a direct and literal fulfillment in the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70, while also pointing forward to a secondary, end-time application just before the close of human history.

This study carefully compares the language of Daniel 8, 9, 11, and 12 with Christ’s Olivet discourse, highlighting both the historical context and the prophetic patterns that Jesus intentionally drew upon. Rather than speculation, the focus is on understanding how prophecy operates across time—how past fulfillment establishes confidence in future warning.

While some questions remain, this discussion is valuable in helping us see the biblical boundaries, the strengths and limits of various interpretations, and the seriousness with which Christ expects His people to study, discern, and watch.
